New Melleray Abbey (Abbey of Our Lady of New Melleray) is a Trappist monastery located near Dubuque, The abbey is located about 15 miles southwest of Dubuque and is in the Archdiocese of Dubuque . Currently the Abbey is home to about 16 monks.
New Melleray Abbey is located in the fertile farmlands and rugged woodlands twelve miles southwest of Dubuque, IA. Guests are welcome to visit the monastery and share in our daily liturgy from Vigils at 4:30am all the way through to Compline at 7:30pm.
About the Monastery. New Melleray Abbey was founded in 1849 by a group of six monks from Mount Melleray Abbey in Ireland. Hard work, patient endurance, and total dedication and trust in the living God served to establish and maintain our communal way of monastic life through the ups-and-downs of our monastery’s long history.
