Apr 1, 2023 · The Cathedral is now the final resting place of many more royal women, such as Caroline of Brunswick, the estranged wife of King George IV of the United Kingdom. The crypt underneath the cathedral can be visited, though I was quite lucky to be allowed through the gates for a closer look.

What a wonderful medieval cathedral full of ancient artefacts , sculptures and tombs . Situated in the centre of this cracking little town , it reminds me of Worcester in England which ironically has an area called Brunswick which I am sure is the translation of Braunschweig. It’s a must for all history lovers the world over.
From early mediaeval frescoes and sculptures, through to the tombs of Henry and Matilda, German royals with English significance, to stained glass and carvings, this was an unusually arresting and engaging cathedral, free from many of the gold and heavy excesses of the Baroque.
