He picked Kamala Harris as his vice president. No, it was brilliant because it was an insurance policy. Maybe the best insurance policy I've ever seen, Marco. If Joe had picked someone even halfway competent, they would have bounced him from office years ago. But they can't because she's got to be their second choice. She has no choice and no chance." Speaking at his golf club in Doral, Florida, Trump stayed mum on his planned choice for his running mate. Taking the stage nearly an hour late on a hot night, Trump blasted the 81-year-old Biden about his shaky debate performance on June 27, which prompted worries about his mental fitness for office and calls from some Democrats for him to step aside. And only during a war you can understand if you can count on someone or not." :: "I hope that the United States will never go out from NATO, otherwise the world will lose a lot of countries, a lot of countries, because of such people like Putin, we will lose a lot of small countries which count on America in NATO, which count on U.S. leadership. - 0:25Trump will be 'open to cutting deals': DBS CEOReuters VideosSTORY: ::July 9, 2024 ::Trump will be 'open to cutting deals', which could suit China, says DBS CEO ::Singapore ::Piyush Gupta/DBS Group CEO "Trump is a dealmaker. He's not ideologically driven to anything. And therefore, he will talk and game and narrative, but he'll be happy to cut deals. And I think in some ways that's helpful because the Chinese also like to cut deals, whereas the Democrats and I tend to be more ideologically driven. So the agenda on human rights and Xinjiang, etc., etc., Those are deeper rooted issues.” DBS is the largest bank in Singapore and Southeast Asia by asset size, and is now the largest shareholder in China's Shenzhen Rural Commercial Bank, which it said gave it a good footprint in the Greater Bay Area, according to its annual report published in March.3 days ago
- 3:12Specter of Trump looms over NATO summitReuters VideosSTORY: U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin welcomed NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg at the Pentagon on Monday, ahead of a NATO summit of world leaders in Washington this week. AUSTIN: "This summit will celebrate 75 years of the greatest defensive alliance in history..." The summit, which kicks off Tuesday, marks the 75th anniversary of the Cold War-era alliance. :: April 4, 1949 The gathering is also meant to showcase the leadership of U.S. President Joe Biden, who rallied NATO allies to show new unity and purpose in the face of Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine. Biden underscored that point during a visit to France in June. :: June 6, 2024 BIDEN: "The United States and NATO and a coalition of more than 50 countries standing strong with Ukraine, we will not walk away." But looming over what was meant to be a symbol of American-led unity is the potential return to power of Republican President Donald Trump, a change that could upend U.S. foreign policy. The Republican's penchant for praising Putin, and his threats that NATO members needed to pay more for mutual defense have alarmed allies. :: February 10, 2024 TRUMP: "One of the presidents of a big country, he stood up, said, 'Well, sir, if we don't pay and we're attacked by Russia, will you protect us?' I said, 'You didn't pay? You're delinquent?' He said, 'Yes, let's say that happened.' (AND TRUMP SAYS HE RESPONDED:) 'No, I would not protect you. In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want. You got to pay. You got to pay your bills.' " Worries among NATO allies have grown since Biden fumbled a June 27th debate, boosting Trump in the polls ahead of a Nov. 5 election. That means this week's summit, instead of highlighting Biden's diplomatic accomplishments, will be laser-focused on his fitness to hold office, and whether he will still be president in 2025. Charles Kupchan is a professor of international relations at Georgetown University. “I think that it right across the alliance, right across NATO members, including Ukraine, there is hope, if not prayer, for a second Biden term because Biden did reinvigorate the Atlantic alliance. Biden has led the effort to support Ukraine. And in contrast, Trump turned his back on the allies during his first term in office. He mused about withdrawing from NATO. He has said during this election campaign, if there are NATO members who don't spend enough on defense, I'm going to tell the Russians to have their way with them. And there is concern that the United States could withdraw from NATO if President Trump is returned to office.” While much of the attention will focus on Biden amid growing calls within his own party to step aside, the delegates will have a full agenda focused on military and financial aid for Ukraine and offering some pathway toward its eventual NATO membership.4 days ago

- 0:58Kamala Harris attacks Trump on abortion rightsReuters VideosSTORY: ::Kamala Harris attacks Trump on women's rights during an appearance aimed at wooing Black voters ::July 6, 2024 ::Kamala Harris U.S. Vice President "This is probably the most significant election of our lifetime. You know, we have said it every four years, but this here one, is it. We are looking an election that will take place in 122 days, where on one side you have the former president who is running to become president again, who has openly talked about his admiration of dictators, and his intention to be a dictator on day one, who has openly talked about his intention to weaponize the Department of Justice against his political enemies, who has talked about being proud of taking from the women of America the most fundamental right about making decisions about your own body." "Understand that the former president who is up for re-election has said he is proud of what has happened, proud of the fact that our daughters will have fewer rights than their grandmothers." ::New Orleans, Louisiana Harris, the top choice to replace U.S. President Joe Biden if he were to step aside as the Democratic Party's standard-bearer, was speaking in New Orleans at the Essence Festival of Culture, an annual culture and music festival sponsored by Essence magazine, whose target audience is Black women. She said the Nov. 5 vote was "probably the most significant election of our lifetime", before warning that Trump was "proud of the fact that our daughters will have fewer rights than their grandmothers." Harris on Friday (July 5) posted a supportive note on X after Biden's rally in Madison, saying the president had devoted his life to fighting for Americans. "In this moment, I know all of us are ready to fight for him," she said. 81-year-old Biden is facing a slow-boil uprising from congressional Democrats and some influential donors who have grown concerned he lacks the capacity to defeat Republican rival Trump in the upcoming election. But the president gave no hint that he was considering stepping aside on Saturday, after a pair of defiant public appearances a day earlier.5 days ago
