Robert Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon KG MC PC (12 June 1897–14 January 1977) was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He was better known throughout his time in office as Sir Anthony Eden. He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford .
Anthony Eden had been waiting for the premiership for a decade. When he finally became Prime Minister in 1955, he quickly called a general election, winning a renewed majority. But he soon embroiled his premiership in a crisis over the Suez Canal.
Anthony Eden is perhaps best known for his decision, as Prime Minister, to launch a military operation against Nasser’s Egypt in 1956, the so-called Suez Crisis.
