Hannibal Hamlin (August 27, 1809 – July 4, 1891) was an American attorney and politician who served as the 15th vice president of the United States from 1861 to 1865, during President Abraham Lincoln's first term.
Jun 13, 2024 · Hannibal Hamlin was the 15th vice president of the United States (1861–65) in the Republican administration of President Abraham Lincoln. Hamlin was the son of Cyrus Hamlin, a physician, sheriff, and farmer, and Anna Livermore. After practicing law, he entered politics as an antislavery Jacksonian.
Hamlin entered politics when he was first elected to the Maine state House of Representatives in 1835. As a Jacksonian Democrat who strongly opposed slavery, he served in state government until he was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1843.

Hannibal Hamlin (August 27, 1809 – July 4, 1891) was an American politician from the state of Maine. Hamlin served in the Maine Legislature, the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate and as Governor of Maine.
Hamlin played little role in President Lincoln’s first term, but did help win Mr. Lincoln’s agreement for the use of black soldiers. Hamlin was a strong supporter of Negro rights, before, during and after the Civil War.
