Schuyler Colfax ( / ˈskaɪlər ˈkoʊlfæks / SKY-lər KOHL-fax; March 23, 1823 – January 13, 1885) was an American journalist, businessman, and politician who served as the 17th vice president of the United States from 1869 to 1873, and prior to that as the 25th speaker of the House of Representatives from 1863 to 1869.

Schuyler Colfax. During Reconstruction (1865–77), Colfax was a leader of the Radical Republicans and favoured extending suffrage to freedmen and disenfranchising former prominent officials of the Confederate States of America. Elected as Grant’s vice president, he failed to win renomination in 1872.

Schuyler Colfax [1823-1885] US President (or related person) Schuyler Colfax grew up in a poor family, although he was a descendant of the wealthy Schuyler clan. He grew up in New York City where his father was a bank teller. His father died from tuberculosis several months before he was born.
