Horatio Gates (born c. 1728, Maldon, Essex, England—died April 10, 1806, New York, New York, U.S.) was an English-born American general in the American Revolution (1775–83) whose victory over the British at the Battle of Saratoga (1777) turned the tide of victory in behalf of the Revolutionaries.
When the American Revolution broke out in 1775, Gates, a strong supporter of independence, became a brigadier general. Promoted to major general in 1776, he took command of troops in New York (Northern Army), and turned back Major General Guy Carleton's invasion of northern New York in October 1776.
