Lipscani is a street and a district of Bucharest, Romania, which from the Middle Ages to the early 19th century was the most important commercial area of the city and Wallachia.
Lipscani is now a narrow little curly street in Bucharest down town, cut in three parts by Calea Victoriei and the main Bucharest’s boulevard, but it use to be the city main street in the 18 century, being for almost 300 years one of the most important street of the city.
While much of Bucharest changed beyond recognition after 1989, nothing compared to the transformation of Old Town/Lipscani during the boom years of the late naughties, which saw what was very much a no-go area with almost nothing to offer visitors into one of the Romanian capital’s liveliest entertainment districts.
Lipscani comprises a small area around Lipscani Street, between Calea Victoriei to the east and B-dul I.C. Bratianu to the west, Piata Universitatiei to the north and the Dambovita River to the south. The name comes from 'Lipsca' - a reference to the German city of Leipzig.
Lipscani is one of the main thoroughfares through Bucharest's Old Town district. As you'd expect, it's full of places to eat and drink, mixed in with shops, and the occasional church or civic building.
