Nov 11, 2020 · Whether or not this was really the way, or the reason, why Magnus was named, it makes an interesting story. Magnus Olafsson would go on to become King Magnus the Good of Norway (r. 1035-1047) and Denmark (r. 1042-1047).
In 1035 the chiefs of Norway rebelled against the rule of Canute’s son Sweyn (Svein) and elected Magnus king. As a very young king, Magnus took his revenge on those chiefs who had fought against his father, but later in life he avoided such lawless behaviour, thereby earning the byname of “the Good.”
