David D. Burns (born September 19, 1942) is an American psychiatrist and adjunct professor emeritus in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine.
- How would you respond to a new client who asks: "What should I talk about?" Therapy is not to "talk about" things, but to change the person's life, and to relieve suffering, such as depression, anxiety, or relationship problems.
- What do clients find most difficult about the therapeutic process? There is no standard "therapeutic process," since there are so many different schools of therapy.
- What mistakes do therapists make that hinder the therapeutic process? This is related to the previous answer. Nearly all therapeutic failure results from what I call "Agenda Setting errors," or the complete failure of the therapist to set the agenda.
- In your opinion, what is the ultimate goal of therapy? There is no "ultimate goal of therapy." Thinking there is some ultimate or universal goal of therapy is one of the most fundamental errors of our field.
