On his manor in Tellow (Mecklenburg) he combined experiences of agricultural practice with mathematical models. He thus became one of the most important pioneers of applied agricultural research.

His paternal ancestors were farmers; despite the ‘von’, they did not belong to the aristocracy. After his father’s early death, Thünen’s mother married a timber merchant.
