22 (US), also known as Big Brother: All-Stars is the 22nd season of the broadcasted edition of Big Brother (U.S.) and the 25th season overall, while celebrating the 20th anniversary of the series.
The season was in limbo due to the severity of the 2019-2020 Coronavirus Pandemic. However it was announced on July 23, 2020 that the season would premiere on August 5, 2020 with a live two-hour premiere, making it the latest start to a Big Brother season since season 14 in late July. It was also the first season to feature a live televised premiere, and the second live premiere overall since Over The Top.
Development
CBS announced that Big Brother had been renewed for a twenty-first and twenty-second season on May 15, 2019. Despite the renewal, fans still speculated on whether or not Big Brother would actually receive a twenty-second season, and if it did, whether host Julie Chen-Moonves would return or not, but the rumors ceased once Chen-Moonves and the official CBS and Big Brother accounts officially announced the season and Chen-Moonves' return on Twitter on the day of the Big Brother 21 (US) Double Eviction. Following the controversial nature of both Big Brother 21 and Survivor: Island of the Idols, on December 17, 2019, CBS announced that Survivor would be undergoing anti-harassment, unconscious bias and sensitivity training for future casts, measures they intended on placing with their other reality shows, including Big Brother, as well.. On the live feeds, houseguests of Big Brother 22 confirmed that they received extensive racial bias and sexual harassment training during their pre-show quarantine and sequester. Following an incident on Big Brother 21, this same training was applied to the production crew almost immediately, before later being applied to the entire cast for this, and future seasons.
Complications Due To The Coronavirus Pandemic
Between seasons 21 and 22 of Big Brother, the 2019-2020 Coronavirus Pandemic began in China and spread around the world, including the United States. The season turned into a question by the fans very quickly after Big Brother Canada 8 was forced to shut down mid-production due to the virus. However, planning continued for the season. The Hollywood Reporter would later go on to report that the season would not be airing due to the pandemic stating: "CBS scripted originals have historically repeated well and, per sources, the network will lean on those to ride out the summer. The network will be without new seasons of Big Brother and Love Island, neither of which had been shot before the world stopped." Hours later, fansite Big Blagger reached out to CBS for a confirmation on the situation. A representative of the network stated, "The situation is still fluid but the intention is for Big Brother to return this summer." One month later after ITV pushed the upcoming season of Love Island (UK) to 2021. On May 4, 2020, CBS would then go on to release their own statement on the future of their version of Love Island (US) and the upcoming season of Big Brother 22. They stated that they will air both shows in the future "when the time is right".
Casting
Kassting, Inc. initially returned to provide casting services for the twenty-first consecutive season since season 2 with Robyn Kass serving as the casting director. Open casting for the season was still held, which opened on September 22, 2019 and closed on April 3, 2020. Open casting at locations around the country were cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. However, online submissions were still available.
•All-Stars: For the first time in 14 years, the Big Brother House is an All-Star battleground. 16 former houseguests, consisting of winners, finalists, legends, memorable personalities and some of the best to never win the game, all have something to prove as they return for another chance at the $500,000 grand prize and to cement themselves as Big Brother Legends.
•Have-Not Choosing: After the first Have-Nots were determined by the first HOH competition, they then had to pick the new Have-Nots themselves for the following week, and the process repeated every week. They are not allowed to pick any other outgoing Have-Nots, including themselves. In Week 5, there were no Have-Nots for the week, and the Week 6 Have-Nots were also determined by a competition, before starting the new selection cycle in Week 7. If an outgoing Have-Not was evicted, there would be no replacement and the number of overall Have-Nots would just decrease.
•Room Twist: New rooms will be added to the house throughout the season, each with its own special twist.
•Safety Suite Competition: For the first three weeks, the All-Stars were given a VIP Pass to the Safety Suite. Once a signal went off, they had an hour to decide if they wanted to swipe their pass and play in the competition. The winner would get safety for the week and could gift it to a "Plus One", making two people immune. The Plus One would receive a punishment in exchange for being safe. The current HOH is ineligible to enter the Safety Suite, and a houseguest can only enter the Safety Suite once before being ineligible for future rounds. If only one houseguest enters the Safety Suite, they will not be guaranteed safety - they will still have to complete the competition before their time runs out in order to win safety.
•BB Basement: In Week 5, the houseguests will compete in a Black Box competition, and three houseguests will win. The three winners will each receive their own power that has the ability to shake-up the game.
•The Disruptor: David Alexander won the power to secretly save a nominee and force the HOH to name a replacement. Whoever he saves will be safe, but unless he uses it on himself, he will still be vulnerable. It can be used following any of the next three Nomination Ceremonies.
