Condor is the common name for two species of New World vultures, each in a monotypic genus. The name derives from the Quechua kuntur. They are the largest flying land birds in the Western Hemisphere. One species, the Andean condor (Vultur gryphus), inhabits the Andean mountains.

Jul 17, 2024 · Condor, either of two large New World vultures—the Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) and the California condor (Gymnogyps californianus)—that are two of the largest flying birds. Wingspans up to 3.2 meters and 2.9 meters have been reported for male Andean condors and adult California condors, respectively.
Condors are high-altitude specialists, nesting and roosting on extremely inaccessible mountain ledges up to 5,000 metres above sea level, and travelling hundreds of kilometres every day in search of carrion. They are extremely large birds, with black feathers and a bald head. They have a band of white feathers on the underside of their wings.
The spectacular but endangered California Condor is the largest bird in North America. These superb gliders travel widely to feed on carcasses of deer, pigs, cattle, sea lions, whales, and other animals. Pairs nest in caves high on cliff faces.
Considered by scientists to be one of the heaviest flying birds in the world, the Andean condor is a colossus member of the vulture family. They have one of the largest wingspans of any bird and utilize this to soar at high altitudes, scanning the mountains for food.
