Rosewood is any of a number of richly hued hardwoods, often brownish with darker veining, but found in other colours. [ 1] It is hard, tough, strong, and dense. True rosewoods come from trees of the genus Dalbergia, but other woods are often called rosewood.

Jul 19, 2024 · Rosewood, any of several ornamental timbers, products of various tropical trees native to Brazil, Honduras, Jamaica, Africa, and India. The most important commercially are the Honduras rosewood, Dalbergia stevensoni, and the Brazilian rosewood, principally D. nigra, a leguminous tree up to 125 feet.
Rosewood is the popular name for wood from a very special group of trees. All true rosewoods belong to the genus Dalbergia. This is a large genus of small to medium-size trees and shrubs with wide distribution through out the tropical regions of Central and South America, Africa, Madagascar and southern Asia.
Growing rosewood in its native conditions (i.e., tropical forests and grasslands) is sustainable because of carbon sequestration and carbon storage in the tree and its rooting system. However, illegal logging and overexploitation of rosewood trees cause much ecological damage.
