Platanus. Platanus ( / ˈplætənəs / PLAT-ən-əss [1]) is a genus consisting of a small number of tree species native to the Northern Hemisphere. They are the sole living members of the family Platanaceae . All mature members of Platanus are tall, reaching 30–50 m (98–164 ft) in height.

Common Name (s): The American sycamore is a large, fast–growing, woody, deciduous tree in the platanus family (Platanaceae). It has a wide spreading, irregularly shaped crown and distinctive bark. It is native to southeastern Canada and the central and eastern United States.
Each head comprises numerous, rather inconspicuous flowers; staminate heads break up after flowering, but the pistillate heads have a hard, central receptacle. The fruit is a small, hairy achene that detaches from the receptacle. A key to the species is provided by Nixon & Poole (2003).

The silvery bark flakes off in patches, revealing the green or ivory inner bark in a camouflage pattern. Fruits are eye-catching too -- rounded, spiky balls that hang in clusters from stalks.
