- Queen Hatshepsut, Ancient Egypt. Hatshepsut was the fifth pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt. She was the second historically confirmed female pharaoh, after Sobekneferu.
- Nefertiti- Queen of Ancient Kemet, Egypt. Nefertiti was queen alongside Pharaoh Akhenaten from 1353 to 1336 B.C. Her reign was a time of major cultural shift when Akhenaten reoriented Egypt’s previously polytheistic religious and political structure around the worship of the Sun God Aten.
- Makeda, Queen of Sheba. Makeda is best known as the beautiful, wealthy, and intellectual queen who tested Solomon with riddles according to biblical text.

African Queens is a 2023 docudrama series focusing on female monarchs, airing on the streaming service Netflix. The series is produced and narrated by Jada Pinkett Smith and features dramatized fictional re-enactments as well as interviews with experts.

- Amina of Zaria. Nigeria, 1533-1610. Known as the "Warrior Queen," Queen Amina is known as the first queen of a male-dominated society. She made history for expanding the territory of the North African Hausa people.
- Yaa Asantewaa of the Ashanti Empire. Present day Ghana, c.1840-1921. Queen Yaa Asantewaa was Queen Mother of the Ashanti Kingdom and was responsible for presiding over the Golden Stool, which established power, culture and stability within the land.
- Kandake Amanirenas of the Kingdom of Kush. Egypt, c. 40 BC - c. 10 BC. Queen lKandake Amanirenas' legacy was cemented due to her skillful defense against the Roman empire.
- Queen Aminatu. Queen Aminatu, daughter of Bakwa Turunku, was a great Hausa warrior. She is well known as a warrior princess, having inherited her mother’s assertive and precise nature.
- Makeda, Queen of Sheba. Ethiopia’s 14th-century royal epic, the Kebra Nagast or “Glory of Kings,” writes that Makeda was a queen of incredible strength.
- Queen Nefertiti. Queen Nefertiti is a prominent queen from ancient Egypt. Her name means “a beautiful woman has come.” She left a legacy of strength, beauty, and power.
- Queen Ranavalona the First of Madagascar. Queen Ranavalona I ruled Madagascar from 1788–1861. She was of Merina descent, which is the island’s largest ethnic group.
