Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow...

[Note: This is the spoiler-filled review for Aquarius' first episode, "Everybody's Been Burned." The entire season will be available online over at NBC.com and on the NBC app on Friday, May 29th so we've also cooked up a relatively spoiler-free full Season 1 review, which you can read here.]

While 1967's "Summer of Love" was in full bloom up in San Francisco, LAPD's Sam Hodiak (David Duchovny's casually weary homicide detective) was treading rather heavily down in a racially divided City of Angels. Not far removed time-wise from the Watts riots, NBC's Aquarius gives us a rather broad, bullet point look back at powder keg Los Angeles and the cops who, quite often, made things worse.

All the while, making ripples right under the surface was a deranged drifter named Charles Manson (Game of Thrones' Gethin Anthony), who'd lived a chaotic life of poverty and crime and somehow managed to come out the other side as a musician/cult leader. Here, in the pilot episode, Charlie sets his sights on a young beauty named Emma (Bunheads' Emma Dumont), who happens to be the daughter of Sam's high school sweetheart, Grace (Michaela McManus). After a heartfelt plea, Sam kicks off a search for Emma that serves to draw us into both his and Charlie's respective worlds.

South Park: 'South ParQ - The Vaccination Special' Review

The series opener for NBC's Aquarius has some interesting elements, but it uses a very wide brush to paint life back in '60s Los Angeles. And a rather dull, romantic one to paint Charles Manson.
