Red Coast is the second episode of the Netflix streaming series Three Body Problem. It aired on March 21, 2024.

Deep inside a bizarre virtual world, a quest to save a civilization begins. Our group’s most gifted physicist, Jin Cheng, is drawn into a virtual reality game, in which a mysterious and hostile world is ravaged by a catastrophic climate. Meanwhile, her close friend Auggie Salazar, a nanotech genius, is tormented into self-sabotage by strange appari...

An older Ye Wenjie is watching a news report by the BBC which talks about the unexpected blinking of the stars that has scientists and others around the world befuddled. However, she is interrupted when there is a knock on her door, and Saul arrives with some food. Eventually, she asks Saul if he has a theory. To which he responds that it’s nothing more than well timed deepfake. He mentions how even though the whole world saw it happened, all the satellites like Webb, Hubble or CHEOPS did not. However, that is as far as his theory got since he doesn’t know who is behind this deepfake.

Elsewhere, Jin embraces Auggie, and tells her that whatever she decides to do, that it is the right thing to do. Once inside, Auggie witnesses her self-assembling synthetic polymer nanofibers work when they slice through a diamond. One of the scientists congratulates her, and tells Auggie that she has made history. However, with what the mystery woman told her still fresh in her mind, as Chief Scientific officer, she orders that they have to shut down the project. Despite this, the countdown is still happening but it eventually stops. She breathes a sigh of relief but is told by Detective Shi that perhaps it's best if she keeps moving, as her colleagues will be coming out soon. He introduces himself to Auggie and asks her if she wants to know why the stars flickered for her.

In inner Mongolia, China, sometime in 1968, someone can be heard saying that, “we extend our best wishes to you, inhabitants of another world. We hope to establish contact with other civilized societies…[and that together they hope] to build a better life in this vast universe”. A young Ye Wenjie asks the man how long they have been transmitting that same message. To which the young man replies that it has been a few years. She then asks if the Americans and Russians are doing the same thing, to which the man responds that they have been doing it for much longer than they have. Ye Wenjie explains how it is the Fermi Paradox, which gets its name from a question that Enrico Fermi asked his colleagues at Los Alamos. She continues by stating how there are a hundred billion stars in our galaxy alone. Therefore, it is within the realm of possibility that many of these aforementioned stars have planets similar to Earth. Which in turn means that, it is highly likely that many of these planets have managed to develop intelligent life.

Later, her colleague tells her how he doesn’t know how she does her job since it's likely listening to the ocean for eight hours. Ye Wenjie states that she works on problems while she’s listening. She then goes on to tell this same coworker how on June 12, 1967, Dr. Peterson’s team in California managed to observe strong bursts of electromagnetic radiation from Jupiter. On that same day, in China, they detected an intense radio burst. However, what is odd is that they picked up that signal not from Jupiter but from the Sun, and not at the same time as the Americans, but thirteen minutes later. When her male colleague is still perplexed, Ye Wenjie explains how if they aim their signal at the sun, it can amplify their transmission, and hopefully they can get a reply many years from now. Unfortunately, this same colleague later tries to take all the credit from the calculations she did. On top of that, her superior calls it too radical of an idea that could get all of them executed. So he vetoes it. However, Ye Wenjie goes against his orders, and as discreetly as possible aims the satellite transmitter to the sun.

In the present day, Detective Shi explains to Auggie how despite there being security footage of the alley she was previously in, all evidence of her talking to the mystery woman is gone. He continues by mentioning that he believes Auggie when she says that she was not alone because someone lit her cigarette since her own lighter does not work. However, it appears that someone worked really hard to scrub this mystery woman out of the footage. What’s odd is that despite knowing it was manipulated, they can’t find any trace of the footage being tampered with. When asked if she was close to Vera Ye, Auggie states that she used to be. But then disappointed her when she quit her course, and switched to applied science. In regards to the countdown Auggie saw, she doesn’t appear to be the only one. A couple of dozen more also experienced the countdown, but it stopped when they either quit working, or after they killed themselves.

Meanwhile, Jin checks in on Auggie, who she still has not heard back from. Eventually, she takes the mysterious shiny helmet in her hands and puts it back on. Once back in the game, she meets Follower and the Count of the West, who tells Jin she is the hero they need to solve a riddle of this world of theirs. On their way to their destination, the Count explains to Jin, now going by Copernicus, they are in a Chaotic Era. Thus, when a new, era arrives, the Emperor consults great minds about the movements of the sun to find out if it will be a Stable Era. Then, the sun in this world comes out, and it is blistering hot. When the amount of shade continues to decrease, the Count pushes Follower out stating that there is only enough room for two. Which results in her dehydration.
