"Pilot" is the first episode of the first season of The Cool Kids and the show's first overall. It originally aired on September 28, 2018 on Fox.
While the gang mourns the loss of their recently deceased friend Jerry, a new resident named Margaret sits in Jerry's seat, upsetting Hank, who was already upset about how little the staff at the retirement home seems to care about Jerry's death. Hank tries to get Margaret to sit elsewhere, but Sid and Charlie have already become friends with her.
After learning, to his horror, that Jerry is going to be cremated, Hank reluctantly accepts Margaret's offer to drive him and the other men to the mortuary to "rescue" Jerry.
Unfortunately, their plans come to a grinding halt when it is revealed that Margaret stole the car from another resident, which leads to them all being arrested.
Eventually, Hank realizes that he has to let Jerry go, and is pleased to find out that Margaret has thrown Jerry a farewell party, leading the group to officially accept her as Jerry's successor.

On September 5, 2017, it was announced that Fox had given the production a pilot order. The pilot was written by Charlie Day and Paul Fruchbom with Kevin Abbott set to serve as showrunner if the pilot was ordered to series.
