"The Crossing" is the second episode in the first season and is the second overall episode of Ghost Whisperer.

Melinda must reunite a child's spirit with his family before another tragedy occurs.

On her way to work, Melinda and her husband, Jim, discuss the arrival of Jim's mother, who can't wait to visit the the newlyweds' home.

Melinda stops by the train crossing, but startles when she sees two little boys playing on the tracks. She hangs up on Jim, and gets out of the car, calling for them to get off the tracks.

Dylan runs towards her, saying that his friend, Kenny, said it was all right. Kenny keeps stubbornly playing as the train approaches, leading Dylan to panic. Melinda stops Dylan from going after him, and tells him to go wait in the car. Kenny appears, completely unharmed, and tells Melinda that he's waiting for his mother.

It's then that Melinda notices a picture of Kenny taped to a fence, surrounded by a sea of flowers and plush toys, and tries to tell him that things will be all right, but Kenny's disappeared.

Melinda returns Dylan to his mother, Sharon, who is upset with him for leaving the square. Dylan insists that Kenny told him that it would all right, and Sharon seems annoyed at the mention, even more when Dylan says that Melinda saw Kenny, too.

Sharon, who believes her son is too old to have imaginary friends, angrily pulls Dylan away without thanking Melinda.
