Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

It’s still too soon to officially decide whether The Flash: Season 5 is the new low point for the series, but the fact that it’s even in the running after the hugely disappointing Season 4 is bad enough. At the very least, Season 5 is burdened by the series’ absolute worst villain (or pair of villains, technically). Cicada simply isn’t a rich or compelling enough character to bring Season 5 to a proper conclusion. The one saving grace of this penultimate chapter is that she may not have to.

With the finale just a week away, the season should be reaching its dramatic peak right about now. But instead, there was surprisingly little urgency to the conflict in “The Girl With the Red Lightning.” Compared to Season 4, where DeVoe tried to wipe out human intelligence across the globe, Cicada’s plot to poison Central City’s metahumans seems small and trite by comparison. It doesn’t help that it became fodder for yet another round of the same fight scene that’s been playing out all season long - Team Flash confronts Cicada, seems to gain the upper hand and then underestimates their enemy and her handy dagger.

I could forgive the underwhelming supervillain plot and cookie cutter action if this episode at least managed to explore Grace’s motivations and rage in a satisfying way. But this season has never put forth much effort in that regard. Grace has only appeared a handful of times since she took over the Cicada mantle, and even then usually as nothing more than a quick, convenient plot device. Say what you will about Season 4’s many mistakes, but at least the series made you care about Clifford and Marlize Devoe. Why should we care about Grace and her undying hatred of metahumans?

This episode tried to get the to heart of Grace’s struggle by emphasizing her connection to Nora. Had past episodes focused on this shared connection more, this might have paid off. But again, the lack of development for Grace and the fleeting focus on her psychic link to Nora made this storyline fall flat. Worse, the reveal that Nora’s own rage and link to the Negative Speed Force was actually caused by her connection to Grace undercut Nora’s recent character arc. So we’re to believe now that her brush with evil had nothing to do with her anger and resentment toward her parents and everything to do with Grace’s rage poisoning her mind?

Neither the Joe nor the Sherloque-focused subplots did much to improve matters this week. Joe’s leadership crisis seemed incredibly forced. We’ve seen him handle bigger crises than this (again, that’s half the problem right there) yet all of a sudden he doubts his abilities? I get the impression the writers are angling for Joe to take over as captain next season and this episode is merely an unnecessary preamble. As for Sherloque, his recent fling with Renee is cute, but here’s another example of a character and a relationship that haven’t been developed well enough for the payoff to connect. Is anyone even going to miss Sherloque if he decides to stay with Renee and run off to another Earth?

As has often been the case in the second half of the season, it falls on Eobard Thawne to pick up the slack. Thawne’s story alone helped provide this episode with the narrative momentum it needed. Far more urgent and exciting than Cicada’s plot was the question of what fate now holds in store for the Reverse-Flash. Has his luck finally run out? Does he still have an angle? Is Ralph right to assume there’s more to the Thawne/Cicada connection than anyone has guessed?

Even the bad Arrowverse seasons tend to improve in the final stretch. But if anything, The Flash Season 5 only seems to be getting worse the closer it gets to the finish line. "The Girl With the Red Lightning" fails to generate much excitement or drama, proving once again that Cicada simply isn't capable of holding her own against past Flash villai...
