Tolkien replied with praise, but also with criticism, saying that his rendition of Bilbo in the painting The Unexpected Party was "too childlike". [1] [2]

Personally, Nasmith’s objectively better work is more inspiring and helps me engage in the story. Tolkien is a GREAT writer, and a pretty good artist. Nasmith is a GREAT artist.I like them all.
