     In 1876, sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi began to make the Statue of Liberty. He started with her most iconic feature—the torch. While he worked on the rest of the Statue, Bartholdi sent the finished torch to the 1876 World’s Fair in Philadelphia, where visitors could climb to its balcony. Finishing the Statue of Liberty took a lot longer than expected, so between 1876 and 1882, the torch was displayed in New York City’s Madison Square Park to help raise funds for the Statue’s completion.
