The fifth of 11 children, Joshua Slocum was born February 20, 1844, in Nova Scotia, Canada. His father, John Slocombe, was a farmer and his mother, Sarah Slocombe, was a lighthouse keeper's daughter. When Slocum was eight, the family moved to Westport, Brier Island, which is located off the tip of Nova Scotia at the mouth of the Bay of Fundy.
