Irving Grant Thalberg Jr. (August 25, 1930 – August 21, 1987) was an American author and the son of 1930s Hollywood producer Irving Thalberg and Academy Award-winning actress Norma Shearer. Thalberg was six years old when his father died from pneumonia at the age of 37.

Childhood & Early Life. Norma Shearer was born on August 10, 1902 at Montreal, Quebec, Canada to Andrew Shearer and Edith Fisher Shearer. Her father owned a construction business. The future of young Shearer was sealed when she saw a vaudeville show on her ninth birthday.
Even after retirement, Norma maintained her interest in the film industry. While staying at a ski lodge, she noticed a photo of the receptionist's daughter and recommended her to MGM - that girl, became the star known as Janet Leigh .
She was born Edith Norma Shearer in Montreal, Canada on August 10, 1902, the youngest of three children. Her father owned a building company and Norma and her siblings had a privileged, happy upbringing.
Norma was a very poor mother to her children and had very little in the form of maternal instincts. She became obsessed with her appearance (a trait she shared with her mother) and in her advanced years succumbed to failing eyesight and dementia, often calling her second husband Martin, "Irving".
Nov 30, 2023 · Norma then married Martin Arrougé, a World War II Navy aviator and former ski instructor to her children, and largely withdrew from the Hollywood scene. Norma passed away on June 12, 1983, of bronchial pneumonia at the Motion Picture Country Home in Woodland Hills, California.
