Fun Facts. History. As early as 1585, the first English explorers visited the area that would become Washington. However, it wasn't until the 1690s that the first settlements appeared. In 1705, Bath, located 15 miles to the east of present-day Washington was founded and became the first town in North Carolina.

Founded by Colonel James Bonner in 1771 and originally known as Forks of Tar River, it was one of the first places in the United States to be named (December 7, 1776) for George Washington.
