    series is an action-adventure survival horror video game franchise developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 consoles, and includes an expanded universe. The first entry of the series began with the prequel comic mini-series American Dreams, released on April 24, 2013. The first major video game installment, The Last of Us, was released on June 14, 2013, and a sequel titled The Last of Us Part II released on June 19, 2020.

    The series takes place in a post-pandemic United States after an outbreak of the Cordyceps brain infection in the year 2013, which has decimated nearly 60% of mankind globally. The first game follows one survivor named Joel, a hardened middle-aged survivor of the outbreak, who meets a brave, young survivor named Ellie who is wise beyond her years, and their adventures across America that showcases real emotion and action against other human survivors and infected.

    The series has garnered universal acclaim from critics and players alike, and won numerous awards and honors. The success of the franchise has resulted in the release of an television adaptation on HBO–following the cancellation of a planned film–as well as a stage adaptation, board games, podcast series, and others.

    As of December 2022, the franchise's games have sold over 38 million copies.
