Sedgwick County is located in the U.S. state of Kansas. Its county seat is Wichita, the most populous city in the state. As of the 2020 census, the population was 523,824, making it the second-most populous county in Kansas. The county was named for John Sedgwick, the highest ranking Union general killed during the American Civil War.

For millennia, the land now known as Kansas was inhabited by Native Americans. In 1803, most of modern Kansas was secured by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase.
Sedgwick County, Kansas, organized in 1870, was named after Major General John Sedgwick. Sedgwick fought in many wars and campaigns including the Mexican and Civil Wars. He died fighting in the Civil War in 1864. Parts of Otoe and Hunter Counties, which no longer exist, were partly in Sedgwick County.
