Roskilde (/ ˈ r ɒ s k ɪ l ə / ROSK-il-ə, Danish: [ˈʁʌskilə]) is a city 30 km (19 mi) west of Copenhagen on the Danish island of Zealand. With a population of 52,580 (as of 1 January 2023), the city is a business and educational centre for the region and the 10th largest city in Denmark.
The Roskilde Festival is a Danish music festival held annually south of Roskilde. It is one of the largest music festivals in Europe and the largest in the Nordic countries. It was created in 1971 by two high school students and a promoter.
