Robeson County ( / ˈrɒbɪsən / ROB-ih-sun) [1] is a county in the southern part of the U.S. state of North Carolina and is its largest county by land area. Its county seat and largest community is Lumberton.
Lumberton, city, seat (1788) of Robeson county, southern North Carolina, U.S., on the Lumber (Lumbee) River about 30 miles (50 km) south of Fayetteville. Founded about 1787 by John Willis, an officer of the American Revolution, it began as a shipping point for lumber and naval supplies floated.
Lumberton is the largest city in Robeson County and is the County Seat. It is ideally situated on Interstate 95 in southeastern North Carolina, just 20 minutes north of the South Carolina border. To many travelers, who stop along the I-95 corridor, Lumberton is the midpoint between New York and Florida.
