Valparaiso is a city in Okaloosa County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Crestview – Fort Walton Beach –Destin, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 4,752, down from 5,036 at the 2010 census.
- Air Force Armament Museum. It feels like everything in this area is in the orbit of Eglin Air Force Base. Dating way back to 1935, this facility is simply immense, covering more than 450,000 acres and extending for miles inland.
- Turkey Creek Park. In the very north of Valparaiso you can access a trail along the banks of the stunning Turkey Creek. This watercourse wriggles southwards through dense swamplands before flowing into Boggy Bayou.
- Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park. You can head around the north end of Choctawhatchee Bay to this breathtaking state park, established in 1966. Before that time, this landscape was a WWII gunnery and bombing practice range.
- Tommy’s Water Adventures. I don’t think it’s possible to set eyes on Choctawhatchee Bay and not feel the need to explore these waters. Well protected, the bay is a dream for kayaking, canoeing or paddleboarding.

History of Valparaiso. At the turn of the last century the area that is now Valparaiso was uninhabited forest land, owned by the Federal Government and opened for homesteading. In 1901, Allen Brown Jr. established a homestead here and acquired title to 15,000 acres of timbered land.
