Lafayette, city, south-central Louisiana, U.S., on the Vermilion River 55 miles southwest of Baton Rouge. The area was first settled by Acadians in 1763. The earliest village, Vermilionville, was established in 1824 but was renamed for the French general the marquis de Lafayette in 1884.
Lafayette is located in the southern central part of Louisiana, at the intersection of Highways 10 and 49. It is the fourth largest city in Louisiana and is the only major city in Louisiana that has grown in population since the year 2000.
