Apr 29, 2022 · Locust Hill was the birthplace of explorer Meriwether Lewis, whom lived there until the age of six, at the time his family moved to Georgia. Before joining the United States Army, Meriwether Lewis did manage the Locust Hill estate, and resided on the land for a second time during his adulthood.
Locust Hill was the working plantation and home of Meriwether Lewis, best known for his role as the leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Named for the locust poplars that are found on the property even to this day, it's located just west of Charlottesville, Virginia and is within riding distance of Thomas Jefferson's, Monticello.

Locust Hill was built on land patented by Robert Lewis in 1740, of which he gave 1,900 acres in 1757 to his son William, upon which he built his home. Locust Hill is located just a few miles north-west of Charlottesville, just off of Three Notched Road (present day Route 250) in the town of Ivy.
Meriwether Lewis was born August 18, 1774, on Locust Hill Plantation in Albemarle County, Colony of Virginia, in the present-day community of Ivy. He was the son of William Lewis, of Welsh ancestry, and Lucy Meriwether, of English ancestry.

Nov 14, 2020 · Meriwether Lewis was born at Locust Hill plantation in Albemarle County, Virginia, on August 18, 1774. He was the eldest of five children born to Lt. William Lewis and Lucy Meriwether Lewis. William Lewis died of pneumonia in 1779 when Meriwether was just five years old.
