Torrington is the most populated municipality and largest city in Litchfield County, Connecticut, United States, and the Northwest Hills Planning Region. It is also the core city of Greater Torrington, one of the largest micropolitan areas in the United States. The city population was 35,515 according to the 2020 census.
Jan 26, 2020 · In the picturesque Hills of Northwest Connecticut, Torrington has a vibrant central business district sprinkled with some striking buildings for a town of just over 35,000. The countryside around Torrington, especially west in the Litchfield Hills, is nothing short of idyllic, and is even better from the patio of one of the area’s wineries.
Torrington, city, coextensive with the town (township) of Torrington, Litchfield county, northwestern Connecticut, U.S., on the Naugatuck River. The town was named in 1732 for Great Torrington, England, but the area was not settled until 1737. The town was incorporated in 1740.

Torrington is nestled in the Litchfield Hills with historical New England charm. This city offers a variety of shopping, dining and recreation for every interest. Downtown is being preserved as a thriving cultural center with the Warner Theatre, Nutmeg Conservatory and many art galleries.

Torrington, in Litchfield County, is located in northwest Connecticut on the Naugatuck River. Originally called Mast Swamp for the pines harvested for use as ship masts, Torrington was settled in 1735, incorporated in 1740, and chartered as a city in 1923.
There are wonderful things to do in and around Torrington. There are hiking trails in the wonderful state parks in the area. You can visit the Torrington Historical Society or the Torrington Library - both are rich with the towns interesting history. There are two public golf courses with great restaurants.
Torrington was designated the second “Cultural District” in the State of Connecticut in April 2022 due to its multitude of nonprofit and for-profit cultural facilities, activities, and assets in its expansive downtown area.
