American Type Founders was formed in 1892 as a consolidation of 23 of the most prominent independent type foundries in the United States. Together, these foundries had dominated American typesetting, but they were beginning to feel threatened by the recent invention of two practical systems for automated mechanical typesetting: the Linotype and the Monotype.

The 1923 American Type Founders Specimen Book and Catalog was the last comprehensive specimen book that ATF ever issued, and very nearly the last truly large specimen book ever issued by an American foundry. There are some projects that need very much to be done... but nobody seems to do them.
