- 1. (1808–75), 17th president of the US 1865–69. As vice president 1865, he succeeded to the presidency upon the assassination of President Lincoln. During his administration, Alaska was purchased from Russia. His lenient policy toward the southern states after the Civil War and his refusal to cooperate with Congress led him to be the first president ever to be impeached. He was acquitted by one vote short of the two-thirds majority required.
