Smith was born into an African-American family in Baltimore, Maryland. Her mother is Anna Rosalind, an elementary school principal, and her father is Deaver Young Smith Jr., a coffee merchant. Smith also has four siblings and one of her sisters is named Rosalind Allen.

In 2008, Smith premiered a one-woman play, Let Me Down Easy. It explored the resiliency and vulnerability of the human body. She portrayed more than 20 characters, who spoke out about current events such as genocide in Rwanda, steroid use among athletes, AIDS in Africa, and the U.S. health care system.
Another one-woman play, Notes from the Fieldpremiered in 2016. It explored the “pipeline” from school to prison for poor students in the United States. The play was later adapted into a TV movie in 2018 in which Smith starred in a variety of roles.
