That impossible dream came true on January 9, 1965 when USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park opened to the public. More than seventeen million visitors later and a statewide economic impact approaching one billion dollars, the Park is easily the most recognizable symbol of the State of Alabama.
Battleship Memorial Park is a military history park and museum on the western shore of Mobile Bay in Mobile, Alabama. Its notable aircraft and museum ships include the South Dakota -class battleship USS Alabama and Gato -class submarine USS Drum.
Today, Battleship Memorial Park welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world each year. These guests come to tour the Park and learn about the men who served aboard the USS ALABAMA and USS DRUM, our nation’s military history, and the price paid for freedom.

Over two thousand people were on hand Saturday, January 9, 1965 to see Governor Wallace officially open USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park. The date was significant since it was eighteen years to the day since ALABAMA had been “put into mothballs” at her decommissioning.
