"Doubt" is the first episode, and the season premiere, of Season Three (and the 46th episode overall) of Criminal Minds.
The team investigates the case of "The Campus Killer," a spree killer who is targeting women at a small college in Flagstaff, Arizona. •The episode bears similarities to the 1972 Italian giallo film The Bloodstained Butterfly. After a murder suspect is taken to trial, the killings continue, and the killer even calls the police to taunt them to say he's still out there. It's revealed the defendant was guilty of the first murder, but the lover of the victim killed more women to get revenge. After the defendant was acquitted, the second killer and the first killer murdered each other in a final standoff.
•The episode was originally scheduled to air as the finale of Season Two, but due to the perceived similarity between its plot and the then-recent Virginia Tech shootings, it was removed from the 2006-2007 lineup and moved to the 2007-2008 lineup instead.
•This episode is the 1st of 4 episodes to not use any bookend quotes. The others are "... And Back", "Derek", and "Twenty Seven".
•Elizabeth Hendrickson, the actress who portrays Katie, previously appeared in another episode of Criminal Minds, starring as Amy Cole in the Season Two episode "P911."
S3.E2 ∙ In Name and Blood. With Gideon still missing, Hotchner puts in for a transfer and Prentiss tenders her resignation, but both are drawn back to work by a serial killer targeting women in a particularly heartless fashion.

During Season Three, Gideon begins to doubt his abilities, sanity and ultimately leaves the BAU. David Rossi returns after ten years of retirement to fill in Gideon's vacant spot and gets extremely involved in a cold case that continues to haunt him.
