David Kellogg Lewis (September 28, 1941 – October 14, 2001) was an American philosopher. Lewis taught briefly at UCLA and then at Princeton University from 1970 until his death. He is closely associated with Australia, whose philosophical community he visited almost annually for more than 30 years.

His contributions span every part of philosophy, from logic and the philosophy of mathematics to ethics and the philosophy of literature. In the philosophy of mind, Lewis was a materialist and a reductionist, arguing that states of the mind are simply states of the brain, functionally conceived.
Oct 16, 2001 · David Lewis, the Class of 1943 University Professor of Philosophy who was a leading figure in his field, died suddenly on Sunday from complications due to diabetes. He was 60. Lewis came to Princeton as an associate professor in 1970.
