Close-ended questions encourage terse, often single-word responses (“yes” or “no,” for example). On the other hand, open-ended questions are designed to promote full, meaningful answers that stem from the students’ own knowledge, thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
Open-ended questions are questions that can’t be answered with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ response. They invite longer responses and encourage people to develop points and go into detail. Examples of open-ended questions include: What do you think will happen next? How do you imagine your future? Tell me about yourself. Why did you choose that answer?
Open-Endedness. Open-ended tasks have more than one right answer, solution or outcome and can be completed in more than one way. They can take the form of statements, questions, tasks, projects or teaching methods. Different learners may use different types of thinking; and there are no predetermined correct outcomes.
