Historical background. Early history. The earliest traces of settlement in the area were found near the Danube and date back approximately 8,000 years. Both Bronze Age and Celtic era archeological finds indicate continuous habitation through the millennia.
History of Deggendorf. Deggendorf has always been a strategically important location - it was once where the trade route following the Isar downstream through Lower Bavaria met up with the traffic along the Danube and the tracks coming through the mountains from Bohemia.
Deggendorf, city, Bavaria Land (state), southeastern Germany. It is on the Danube River, 2.5 miles (4 km) above its confluence with the Isar River. Deggendorf lies at the western foot of the Bavarian and Bohemian forests, east of Straubing. Founded about 750, it passed to the dukes of Bavaria in 1242 and was chartered in 1316.
