The Beach Museum of Art’s twentieth anniversary theme, “You Gotta Have Art,” was inspired by the words printed on caps worn by Elizabeth Layton and her second husband in many of her self-portraits. The caps were gifts from her friend Don Lambert. The succinct phrase encapsulates how art was a positive force in Elizabeth Layton’s life.

Every day Layton worked at creating self-portraits that reflect her response to contemporary social issues. That fall, a local newspaper reporter, Don Lambert, was searching for an interesting subject for an article, and stumbled upon the class display at the college.
Nov 23, 2000 · Don Lambert was a 27-year-old newspaper reporter in a nearby town. At the age of 68, Elizabeth Layton took her first and only art class. By looking into a mirror and drawing pictures of herself, she cured a 30-year depression and emerged as a nationally recognized artist.
