By 2000, Berlin comprised twenty-three boroughs, as three new boroughs had been created in East Berlin. Today Berlin is divided into twelve boroughs ( Bezirke ), reduced from twenty-three boroughs before Berlin's 2001 administrative reform.
The neighbourhoods in Berlin's east follow one rule: no two are alike! Whether you discover the castle of Frederick the Great's wife in cool Pankow , experience the "real slab" in Marzahn-Hellersdorf , visit Europe's largest zoo in Lichtenberg or sail across the water in Treptow-Köpenick.
Nov 7, 2014 · Ulrike Poppe moved here in 1971 as a wide-eyed 18-year-old from the quiet East German countryside and now lives in a book-lined apartment just off Kollwitzplatz. She recalls a very different ...
- Mitte. The best neighborhood for immersing yourself in Berlin's history. Destroyed and reconstructed several times, Mitte is the pulsating heart of Berlin.
- Prenzlauer Berg. Best neighborhood for trendy cafes and and charm. Though Prenzlauer Berg is largely known for being a family-oriented neighborhood, it remains a great example of why you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.
- Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. The best neighborhood for exploring alternative culture. Although these are two completely different districts, we Berliners consider them one.
- Neukölln. The best neighborhood for a bohemian experience. From once being one of the most dangerous districts in Berlin to becoming the go-to area for every Berliner, Neukölln is a microcosm of the city encapsulated within a single district.

- Prenzlauer Berg. Prenzlauer Berg is perfect example of the confusion regarding neighborhoods. Though this is one of the most popular areas for visitors and Berliners, it is actually part of the Pankow Bezirk.
- Friedrichshain. Friedrichshain is now part of a combined district of Friedrichshain -Kreuzberg, but these Kiez across the water have distinct personalities.
- Kreuzberg. Like so many of Berlin's coolest neighborhoods, Kreuzberg was once the area for immigrants, then squatters, then artists and students, and is now being taken over by a much richer crowd at a breathtaking pace.

Mitte & Eastern Berlin Neighborhoods. Mitte Called Berlin-Mitte, Stadtmitte (City Center), or just plain Mitte (Center), this is the central section of former East Berlin. Before the war and the division of the city, this area was, in fact, the center of Berlin and it has regained its former pre-eminence to such an extent that many visitors ...
