Ex-Labour Jeremy Corbyn defeats old party candidate
Reuters Videos16 minutes agoSTORY: ::July 5, 2024 ::Ex-Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn defeats old party in north London, says people 'want something different' Jeremy Corybn/Former Labour Party leader "This result is, to me, a resounding message from the people of Islington North that they want something different, they want something better, and in the new government that's coming in they're looking for an end to things like the two child benefit policy cap. They're looking for regulation of the private rented sector. And if I may say so, they're also looking for a government that on the world stage will search for peace, not war, and not allow the terrible conditions to go on that are happening in Gaza at the present time." ::London Corbyn resigned as Labour leader in 2019 after the party suffered its worst election defeat since 1935, and Starmer threw him out of the parliamentary party less than a year later, accusing him of undermining efforts to tackle anti-Semitism. Starmer is now set to succeed where Corbyn failed and become prime minister, having tacked towards the centre-ground, and he often cites Corbyn's exclusion from Labour ranks in parliament as a sign of how he has changed the party. However, in a bitterly contested vote in Corbyn's north London constituency of Islington North, which he has represented since 1983, he hung on to the seat, defeating Labour candidate Praful Nargund by 24,120 votes to 16,873.

- 1:05UK PM Sunak concedes election defeatReuters VideosSTORY: ::July 5, 2024 ::British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak concedes defeat, saying Labour has won ::Northallerton, England "The Labour Party has won this general election, and I have called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory. Today, power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner, with goodwill on all sides. That is something that should give us all confidence in our country's stability and future. The British people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight. There is much to learn and reflect on, and I take responsibility for the loss to the many good, hardworking, conservative candidates who lost tonight. Despite their tireless efforts, their local records of delivery, and their dedication to their communities. I am sorry. I will now head down to London, where I will say more about tonight's result. Before I leave the job of Prime Minister, to which I have given my all. I will then return here to my family's home. And I look forward to spending more time with you all in the weeks, months and years ahead. Thank you.'' On a humiliating night for Sunak, the Conservatives have so far only won 70 and were predicted to suffer the worst performance in the party's long history with voters punishing them for a cost of living crisis, failing public services, and a series of scandals. Sunak conceded defeat and said he had called Starmer to congratulate him on his victory. Sunak stunned Westminster and many in his own party by calling the election earlier than he needed to in May with the Conservatives trailing Labour by some 20 points in opinion polls, and his campaign then proved a disaster.2 hours ago
- 2:00Who is Keir Starmer, Britain's next prime minister?Reuters VideosSTORY: (Keir Starmer) "Change only happens if you vote for it." As much of Europe lurches to the right, Keir Starmer's left of center Labour Party is set to take office in Britain for the first time in 14 years. Here's how we got here. :: Left-wing household :: Alistair Smout, UK Economics correspondent Keir Starmer is from a left-wing family. He shares his name with Keir Hardy, the founder of the Labour Party. But he actually came to politics in his 50s after a successful career as a barrister. :: 2020 "It is the honor and the privilege of my life to be elected as leader of the Labour Party. It comes at a moment like none other in our lifetime." :: Restoring discipline in the Labour Party Starmer came to lead the party in 2020, and it wasn't all smooth sailing at all. Starmer inherited an incredibly divided party. It was riven by row over antisemitism. And the defeat in 2019, which led to the resignation of leader Jeremy Corbyn, was incredibly damaging. (Jeremy Corbyn) "I will not lead the party in any future general election campaign." Having said that, Starmer has now put himself in a position to take office. Part of that has to do with how conservative fortunes have fallen apart with the resignation of Boris Johnson and then Liz Truss. But it's also been to do with how Keir Starmer has instilled a sense of discipline in the party. :: What will a Labour government look like? Now that the Labour Party are coming to power, it's possible that Starmer will face pressure from trade unions, from some of the left of his party to be a bit bolder, to deliver a real sense of change. And even though Starmer says there isn't a magic wand, he is hoping to deliver growth, which might be able to let him put a bit more investment into public services. The Conservatives say that t Labour are going to have to announce more tax increases. Something that Keir Starmer has denied. Starmer has said that growth will be enough to deliver the improvement in public finances that the Labour government will need in order to increase spending. But if that growth isn't forthcoming, then he could find that his honeymoon period is quite short indeed.2 hours ago

- 0:35Keir Starmer says UK has 'voted for change'Reuters VideosSTORY: ::July 5, 2024 :: The UK has voted to end the 'politics of performance,' says Keir Starmer :: London :: Keir Starmer/Labour Leader ''Because tonight people here and around the country have spoken and they're ready for change to end the politics of performance. A return to politics as public service. The change begins right here because this is your democracy, your community and your future. You have voted. It is now time for us to deliver. Thank you very much.'' Exit polls published earlier showed Labour winning the national election with a clear majority, placing Starmer on track to take over as prime minister from Rishi Sunak. Centre-left Labour was on course to capture 410 of the 650 seats in parliament, an astonishing reversal of fortunes from five years ago when it suffered its worst performance since 1935. The result would give Labour a majority of 170 and would bring the curtain down on 14 years of increasingly tumultuous Conservative-led government.3 hours ago

- 0:47Likely new UK finance minister Rachel Reeves wins seatReuters VideosSTORY: :: The likely new UK finance minister Rachel Reeves wins seat :: July 4, 2024 :: Leeds, United Kingdom :: Rachel Reeves, Shadow Chancellor “Thank you. It is a huge honour and a privilege to have been returned as the Labour member of Parliament for Leeds West and Pudsey.” “We have campaigned as we mean to go on as a government of unity, not of division. A government of wealth creation and a government in the national interest. Country first, party second. That is our promise to Britain. That is my promise to the people of Leeds West and Pudsey. We will not let you down. I will not let you down and I can't wait to get started." Reeves, 45, previously worked as an economist at the Bank of England and is set to become finance minister if Labour win the election. She has said Labour will stick to strict fiscal rules about not borrowing to fund day-to-day spending, but has opened the door to increased government investment, funded by borrowing, to shape strategically important markets, echoing the "modern supply side economics" policies advocated by U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. Reeves has dubbed her own approach 'securonomics'.4 hours ago
- 0:22Chances of winning 'as good as Sunak's': Count BinfaceReuters VideosSTORY: :: Richmond, England ::July 5, 2024 ::Count Binface says his chances of winning are 'as good as Rishi Sunak's' Binface - a perennial satirical candidate in many local and national elections in the UK - challenged Sunak in his constituency in northern England dressed in his customary silver outfit, complete with cape and a trash can as a helmet. Played by comedian Jonathan Harvey, Binface has already rivalled two ex-prime ministers at national elections - Theresa May in 2017, albeit then in his former guise of Lord Buckethead, and Boris Johnson in 2019. He also contested the London mayor elections in 2021 and in May this year when he won over 24,000 votes. Among his eye-catching policies are pledges to price-cap croissants at 1.10 pounds ($1.39), national service for all former prime ministers and that he should represent the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest.4 hours ago
- 0:40Anti-conservative voters cheer as UK exit poll rolls inReuters VideosSTORY: :: Anti-Conservative voters celebrate an exit poll which predicts a massive majority for the Labour Party :: London :: July 4, 2024 :: Pranay Manocha, Anti-conservative voter “The exit poll is just amazing. I mean, fourteen years of tory (Conservative) chaos and we are finally out of it, and we are out of it with a huge bang. I mean 410 seats for Labour is just amazing.” :: David Boughton, Anti-conservative voter “I’m really pleased. I’m cautiously optimistic that we’re going to have some competent governance moving forward, that’s all I hope for.” The election viewing party taking place at Fire nightclub in central London was hosted by an anti-Conservative group called ‘Stop The Tories’, who encourage voters to vote tactically and vote swap to ensure that the ruling Conservative Party fails to extend its 14 years in government. Centre-left Labour was on course to capture 410 of the 650 seats in parliament, an astonishing reversal of fortunes from five years ago when it suffered its worst performance since 1935. The result would give Labour a majority of 170 and would bring the curtain down on 14 years of increasingly tumultuous Conservative-led government. The centrist Liberal Democrats were predicted to capture 61 seats while the right-wing populist Reform UK party, headed by Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage who had pledged to destroy the Conservatives, was forecast to win 13. While the prediction for Reform was far better than expected, the overall outcome suggests the disenchanted British public appears to have shifted support to the centre-left, unlike in France where Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally party made historic gains in an election last Sunday (June 30).6 hours ago

He had previously called on France’s young voters to reject extremism and, on the eve of his team’s quarter-final against Portugal, was asked again for a message ahead of the return to the polls on Sunday for the parliamentary election run-off.9 hours ago
- 1:30Britain votes as Labour expected to sweep to powerReuters VideosSTORY: 40,000 polling stations opened across Britain on Thursday (July 4) as voters made their choice in a parliamentary election expected to bring Keir Starmer's Labour Party to power. Pollsters predict Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Conservatives will be swept away after 14 often turbulent years. Sunak cast his vote early in his northern English constituency alongside his wife. Opinion polls put Starmer's center-left party on course for a landslide victory. Sixty-one-year-old Starmer also arriving at a London polling station with his wife to cast his ballot. In statement Starmer, the former chief prosecutor of England and Wales, said: "Today, Britain can begin a new chapter.'' Voters on London's streets had mixed emotions. ''I feel like every candidate is pretty awful. In all honesty, if I was going to vote for any one I would vote for Labour. But I don't think any of them are good choices.'' ''I'm optimistic. I think it's been a pretty dreadful ten, 12, 14 years. So pretty optimistic." - 2:29High cost, safety worries hit Paris Olympics bookingsReuters VideosSTORY: The Olympic Games should be an economic boon for any city hosting it, as visitors flock to the event. Now Paris is due to host the 2024 Games in a few weeks, but high costs and security concerns seem to have put some visitors off. One leading data firm said flight bookings to the French capital are expected to rise by a tenth year-on-year from June 6 onwards. That is a sharp contrast to the 115% increase in tourist arrivals for the 2016 Rio Games. Even the Tokyo Games, held during the pandemic, saw bookings up by a fifth. Further data also showed hotel reservations have dropped since last year for the weeks ahead of the Olympics. One U.S.-based sports travel agent said it was the lowest bookings he'd seen in a quarter of a century for almost any sports event. The findings show the challenges major cities face hosting such events, as more price-conscious consumers can be put off. London experienced something similar in 2012, when it only saw a 3% increase in arrivals. But it is still a blow for Paris. The city's tourist office said average hotel prices during the Games have surged by 70% to $369 a night from last year. Meanwhile, homesharing site Airbnb says it has seen record Paris bookings. As of March, nights booked in the Paris region during the games were 400% higher than the same time a year ago. However, Air France-KLM said on Monday it expected weaker-than-expected summer sales as travelers avoid the Olympics. One luxury travel agency said clients had cited security worries as well as pricing as a reason to postpone trips. France is on its highest level of security alert, with the country also undergoing snap elections. The French capital's chief of police said last month Islamist terrorism is the main security worry. But some travel agencies hope there will be a last-minute rush for tickets and accommodation. They also think potential late discounts could draw crowds One analytics firm said visitors may arrive by train or car, and will not show up in flight data. Train operator Eurostar said ticket sales volumes to Paris for the Olympics and Paralympics travel period were up 7% year-on-year. The city should also be in for at least some financial success. One recent study estimated the Games would generate up to $12 billion in economic benefits to the Paris region.20 hours ago

And we've made the argument that if you look after family carers, if you look after professional carers, you can rescue our NHS as well." Starmer was focused on Labour's fear that voters could see the result as a foregone conclusion and stay at home during polling on Thursday (July 4), or register protest votes with smaller parties. - 2:31Reform's Farage aims to shake up UK politics after electionReuters VideosSTORY: Nigel Farage’s supporters are out in full force in England's Clacton-on-Sea to ensure he wins his first ever seat in parliament. Representing the right-wing Reform party, Farage says a victory would shake up British politics, in the same way that Marine Le Pen's National Rally is doing in France. A supporter of Donald Trump's, he's the man who sold Brexit to millions of voters but failed seven times to be voted in. This time, Farage rates his chances of winning a seat in this seaside town at over 50%. “We've been going a month and a day at full pelt with this, getting millions of votes. We're going to do that. I'm certain of it. Getting some seats. I'm certain of it. If it's a lot more than that, then fantastic. But, I mean, I've made it clear from the start to everybody, including prospective voters. This is our first significant step towards a much longer goal, term goal, which is aiming at 2029, but also is aiming at building a mass movement for common sense across the country.” Reform has kicked out several candidates for reported racist or offensive comments during the campaign. Farage was buoyed by the success of Le Pen's anti-immigration far-right RN party, but he denies Reform is racist. The party pledges to stop "non-essential" immigration, leave the European Convention on Human Rights and push migrants arriving by small boats back to France before they land on British shores. “What I inherited a month ago was a complete start up. A lot of those candidates, as I now understand it, were kind of begged for at the last minute because they didn't have enough people, they didn't have the resources, the manpower to vet them. So have we got a few bad apples? Yeah, we have, rather like the Greens." Farage has always sought to smash the status quo in British politics. And his surprise about-turn a month ago to enter the election race as Reform’s leader threw the ruling Conservatives into a panic. Until then, most had discounted the party's candidates as little more than a headache. But the Conservatives are divided after 14 years in power and forecast for an overwhelming defeat by Labour. Reform is set to win more votes but fewer seats than the long-established third party in British politics, the Liberal Democrats.2 days ago

Nvidia looks set to face antitrust charges in France. Reuters sources say watchdogs are concerned by the firm’s dominance in AI systems. If confirmed, it would be the first action against the chip champion by a national enforcer. The EU has a bunch of big names in its crosshairs. Regulators are looking at Microsoft’s relationship with OpenAI, and Google’s partnership with Samsung. Worries include whether Big Tech is blocking smaller rivals from reaching users and businesses. In a year of big elections, AI isn’t yet doing much to sway votes. That’s the conclusion of experts in the UK who studied the technology's impact on 112 national elections. Researcher Sam Stockwell says it’s more that AI is making existing problems worse: “Things such as an erosion of trust in governments and information sources, deepened political polarisation, the kind of consolidation of echo chambers. All of these things, I think, deepfakes and AI threats are just enhancing.” Apple is getting a seat on OpenAI’s board, sort of.
