Leaders in Innovation. How Elijah McCoy Invented ‘The Real McCoy’. During America’s Industrial Revolution, there was perhaps no invention more impactful than the steam engine. By boiling water and using hot steam to drive a piston back and forth, the movement of the piston would then power a machine or rotate a wheel.
In his lifetime, Elijah McCoy held over 57 patents. In 1916, Elijah invented a graphite lubricator, allowing superheated machinery to be oiled. Other inventions included a movable ironing board and lawn sprinkler.
