March was married to actress Florence Eldridge from 1927 until his death in 1975, and they had two adopted children. They appeared in seven films together, the last being Inherit the Wind. March and Eldridge commissioned Wallace Neff to build their house in Ridgeview Drive, Bel Air, in 1934.
