We came very close to not having Masina star in the picture, and looking back at the film it’s hard to picture anyone else in the role. Masina isn’t just playing Gelsomina, she is Gelsomina.

Child like, bubbly, waif. A little overage. We first see Gelsomina from behind with a bunch of sticks on her back. She wears tattered pants and a shirt. Later, she wears clown makeup and a funny looking bowler hat. Clown like tshirts. Chaplinesque getup. Short hair which she combs forward over her forehead giving her an extremely plain appearance.
