     I was able to do this on a regular chrome installation by doing the following:

     • Download the extension in crx format - how to download a crx file from the chrome web store for a given id
     • Unzip the crx file
     • I had to rename the _metadata folder to metadata
     • Open the chrome extensions page
     • Enable Developer mode
     • Click "Load unpacked extension..."
     • Select the unzipped folder

     This worked for me when I needed to install Advanced REST client.

     If you want multi platform in one CRX, you should put them in this order within the manifest:

     "plugins": [ { "path": "plugin-windows.dll" }, { "path": "plugin-linux.so" }, { "path": "plugin-mac.plugin" }]

     Remember uploading your NPAPI extension to the store will only work in Google Chrome Extensions. In the case of Google Chrome OS (which uses Google Chrome), you will not be able to use NPAPI.

     But you should look into PPAPI which will be the recommended way doing plugin development for extension:

     In the meantime NPAPI in extensions, you need to follow this guide (which works great):

     http://code.google.com/chrome/extensions/npapi.html

     Just remember, do you really need to use NPAPI in your extension? If you could find a HTML5 workaround, it would be better.

     It's not possible to use packed extensions for anything but very limited testing those days.

     Chrome explicitly forbids installs from sources other than CWS. So you really need to either use it unpacked (if it's only for yourself) or publish it to CWS as unlisted/trusted testers (if it's for a small group of people).

     The feature to pack still exists, since enterprise deployments and apps are not subject to these restrictions. 99% likely that you won't be able to use enterprise deployment though.

     I found the following solution:

     • Set up a manifest file to define a content script that is added to every page, and a separate background page.
     • In the Content Script .js file, add an event listener for the 'copy' event, either for the document or the window. This event listener is called whenever the user initiates a copy action.
     • Since content scripts exist in a security sandbox (e.g., no cross-site XMLHttpRequests), we probably want to respond to the event in the background page. To do so, use the Chrome message passing API so send a message to the background page.

     A small working example:

     manifest.json

     UPDATE:

     Execute second script after the first one would be more accurate in terms of script order, result is an array of results of execution of the script in list of tabs.

     chrome.tabs.executeScript(null, {file:'js/jquery-2.1.1.min.js'}, function(result){ chrome.tabs.executeScript(null, {file:'js/myscript.js'});});-

     OLD:

     Injecting Jquery followed by your script will gives ability to access Jquery within your script.

     chrome.tabs.executeScript(null, {file:'js/jquery-2.1.1.min.js'});chrome.tabs.executeScript(null, {file:'js/myscript.js'});-

     You have more control over how the script should be injected as described in here. Specially allFrames property is important if you wish to inject script to all the frames within the document. Ignoring it will only injected into the top frame. Since it is not mentioned in other answers guess it helps you. Scripts can be injected always by adding it to manifest as described here.
