The Griffith Park Zoo that had opened in 1912 officially closed five decades later, in August 1966. With its demise, Park Superintendent Frank Shearer’s long-ago notion of Los Angeles as home to “one of the greatest zoos in the world” was not to be.

Apr 13, 2015 · The Old Zoo at Griffith Park was seemingly designed to send someone like me into a full blown panic. Its remains hug the hillside of a sunny canyon about two miles down Crystal Springs Road from the current Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens.
The Los Angeles Zoo is located in the northeast corner of Griffith Park directly across from The Autry Museum of the American West. Parking is free. The Zoo is a main stop on a Metro bus line. Public Transit. Take Metro Bus 96 that runs between downtown Burbank and downtown Los Angeles.

You can see Komodo dragons, wart pigs, and orangutans — or walk through a gorilla's forest. Besides those obvious things to do, the zoo has quite a few nighttime and after-hours activities.
